CD Review by Dan
Aloi:
Blue Sky Mission Club: "Zydeco Nation" (note: The title of
the CD has been changed to "Riding The Horizon" since this
review was written).
For a local zydeco band to be invited to the big-time
parties of the Finger Lakes GrassRoots and Great Blue Heron
festivals, they had better be good.
Blue Sky Mission Club is better than good. The band is
unique.
While most zydeco groups are content to let the accordian
pump along on cover songs and traditional material, Blue Sky
leader London McDaniel makes the guitar an undeniable force
in the band. His soaring psychedelic runs on electric guitar
and pedal steel glide above the two-step rhythm to make
something new out of something familiar.
Some of the original songs carry a reggae lilt, others have
Saturday night grit, and soulful lead singer Lisa Gould can
handle both easily.
The band also includes bassist Charlie Shew, accordionist
Pete Laba, fiddler Joseph Prusch, rubboard player Rob
Delphous and drummer Luke Bernthon
Blue Sky Mission Club's next show is Saturday night at the
Rongovian Embassy in Trumansburg.
